Things to Know Before You Eat

The insider context that changes how you experience Mexico City's food culture.

🌮 Taco Types

Mexico City has at least 10 distinct taco types. Tacos al pastor (marinated pork from a trompo) are the most famous. Tacos de canasta (basket tacos, sold from bicycle baskets) are the workers' breakfast. Suadero (beef brisket) tacos are the late-night staple.

🏛️ Food Since Pre-Hispanic Times

The Aztec market of Tlatelolco (which Hernán Cortés described in letters as larger and better-organized than any market in Spain) is the ancestor of today's mercados. Food culture in CDMX runs 700+ years deep.

⏰ Eating Hours

Breakfast: 8-11am (tamales, chilaquiles). Lunch: 2-5pm (the main meal — comida corrida). Late night: 11pm-3am (tacos outside clubs). Dinner as a separate meal is not a strong tradition.
