Things to Know Before You Eat

Otto's fast facts for eating Mexico right.

🌮 Taco Etiquette

Real tacos come on two small corn tortillas, not one. Eat them standing. Don't ask for a fork. Salsa is self-serve — try all of them, order of increasing heat.

🌶️ Chilli is Everything

Mexico has over 60 types of chilli. The same chilli has different names fresh vs dried (poblano becomes ancho, jalapeño becomes chipotle). Heat level is never guaranteed — always ask.

🕐 Meal Times Are Different

Breakfast: 7–10am. Comida (lunch, the main meal): 2–4pm. Cena (dinner): 8–10pm. The best tacos appear after 9pm. Birria queues start at 8am.

🫕 Oaxaca vs CDMX

Mexico City is street food paradise. Oaxaca is for complex, heritage cooking. Go to both. They are completely different food universes despite being 6 hours apart.

💸 Budget Reality

Street food: MX$20–60 per item. Market lunch: MX$80–150. Restaurant (non-touristy): MX$150–300. Skip restaurants near churches and zócalos — those are tourist pricing.
