Things to Know Before You Eat

The insider context that changes how you experience Portugal's food culture.

🐟 365 Bacalhau Recipes

There are 365+ ways to cook bacalhau (salt cod) — one for every day of the year. Over 1,000 documented recipes. Bacalhau isn't native to Portugal — it comes from North Atlantic fishing grounds.

🥧 The Custard Tart Standard

Pastéis de nata from Pastéis de Belém (operating since 1837) are the benchmark. The secret recipe is held by three people. Tarts served hot, with cinnamon and powdered sugar. The queue is always 45 minutes. Always worth it.

🫓 Francesinha is a Challenge

A toasted sandwich with multiple meats (beef, pork, sausage, ham), melted cheese, drenched in spiced beer-tomato sauce, topped with an egg. The most calorie-dense item in southern Europe and also one of the most delicious.

🍷 Port Wine Culture

Made in the Douro Valley by stopping fermentation with aguardente. Taylor Fladgate, Sandeman, Ramos Pinto are the major houses. White port with tonic is the local aperitif.

💸 Budget Reality

Pastel de nata: €1-2. Bifanas (pork sandwich): €2.50-4. Tasca lunch: €8-14. Restaurant: €18-35. Portugal is exceptional value for European food quality.
